The Great Escape

It was the end of another long, hard day of thankless work at the sanctuary as the sun gradually slipped behind the gently rolling hills to the west and the evening’s chill replaced the sweltering heat of a day filled with the blood, sweat and tears that are the rule rather than the exception when tending to more than one hundred forty pigs that depend solely on Suey for their food, shelter, love, affection and medical needs. All snuggled in their respective homes with bellies full to their heart’s content, little did Suey know that two of her residents were hatching a plan to test the “Greener Grass” on the other side of the fence. Sometime during the night “Snuggles” (aka Houdini) and Zooie her faithful partner in crime did manage to make their way to freedom. An urgent call at the crack of dawn reported that Zooie had been spotted on a nearby property making amorous advances toward a display of pumpkins on the caller’s lawn. Quicker than I could say “All Points Bulletin” Suey was dressed and on her way to bring Zooie in. Another call was received shortly thereafter indicating his sidekick Snuggles had also been sighted on another piece of property nowhere near Zooie. They probably split up in and effort to avoid capture and throw the authorities off their track. Yeah, these guys are smart. Smile. As we have all experienced during the course of our lives, the grass is rarely greener on the other side of any fence but until our curiosities are satisfied and we realize just how good we actually do have it, the temptation to test the waters elsewhere will always torment our minds. As for Zooie and Snuggles, the wag of their tails and the sparkle in their eyes as they were reunited with their friends and family made it clearly evident that they were extremely happy to be back home where they belong. Be thankful for what you have and know the shade of your neighbors grass is only an illusion. Truly.
